    Acts 18.24-28

    The book of the Acts of the Apostles reveals clearly that the Christian movement grew out of the ministry and influence of John the Baptizer. Apollos, a native of the city of Alexandria (Egypt) came to Ephesus. Luke says that he was an eloquent man, “competent in the Scriptures.” He says further that Apollos had a fervent spirit, had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and spoke and taught with accuracy the things concerning Jesus, except that he was only informed as to that ministry up to the baptism of John.

    After Paul had left Ephesus (and probably before he returned there again) a church had been planted, under the influence of Aquila and Priscilla, his wife. Apollos began to speak boldly in the synagogue there, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard Apollos and saw the gaps in his knowledge concerning the Lord, “they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” Rather than seeking to correct Apollos in public, this couple (not just Aquila, but Priscilla and Aquila – note that Priscilla is mentioned first) discipled him in the truth in their home, explaining the Way of the Lord “more accurately,” i.e., adequately.

    The influence of this discipleship is immediate and impactful. Filled with new knowledge of the truth, Apollos wanted to cross the Aegean Sea to Achaia, and stepped out with the encouragement of the brothers who urged the disciples to welcome him on the other side. When Apollos finally arrived, he was used mightily of the Lord, in Luke’s language, and was of great help to those who through grace had believed. Apollos became an apologist, a defender of the faith, and powerfully refuted the arguments of the Jews in public, and demonstrated from the Scriptures that the Messiah was in fact Jesus of Nazareth.

    Priscilla’s and Aquila’s love for truth, for the Church, for discipleship, and for the Lord was used in powerful ways by Christ to found a church in their house (1 Cor. 16.19), equip Apollos in the full Gospel truth, and befriend the apostle Paul and other believers. We should emulate her heart for others and for the truth.

    Thank you, eternal Father, for the focus and heart of Priscilla, the dear wife of Aquila, who together with him taught the truth of the way of the Lord, and grounded preachers and churches in the truth of Christ. Grant us her heart that we might go on to train and equip others in the ways of Christ our Lord. In his name we pray, amen.

You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God’s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.
