I have had a couple coworkers ask about what we are using in LA for new believer follow-up and discipleship. Below are four resources churches in our association are currently using. If you have used one of these resources, or have one you would recommend, please join the conversation and share your thoughts and experiences with the various tools. Thanks.

Discipleship Essentials. (18 languages) Rev. Hector Cedillo introduced me to this excellent tool. Hector was discipled by the church planter who wrote this curriculum. It is a 10 step curriculum that could be done at whatever pace you want. The preface has some excellent advice on discipleship. You can download it in MS word, or various other formats. You can also order it pre-printed, for $2.00-3.00 a book if you don’t want to reproduce it yourself. When I did the study, half the group had Spanish copies and half English copies, which worked well in our context. You can check it out at www.northpark.edu/sem/discipleship . Free Online.

Making of A Disciple Workbook. (English) This is a curriculum designed for following up new believers. The workbook is based on the 13 chapters of Dr. Keith Phillip’s book The Making of a Disciple, but the workbook can be used independently. It includes Scripture memory, Scripture passages for study, and case studies for discussion. After you bring someone to Christ, this study seems to me to be a great place to take them through what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. The workbook can be download at: www.tumi-la.org/resources/makingofadisciplewb.html Free Online.

Master the Bible System. TUMI has just come out with a discipleship program that is based on Jesus’ model of discipleship which centered on Scripture memorization. This is the most comprehensive discipleship program I have seen. It is simple to use, but has enough content that it could take eight years to go through the whole program of discipleship. By that time, you would be ready to go through it again. Basically there are four series of studies with 50 lessons in each course (but you could spend two years on each course if you wanted). One course focuses on new believers, one on knowing Christ through the Christian year, one on the big picture story line of the Bible, and one on Spiritual Leadership. You can also read about the Master the Bible System at www.tumi.org, and there is a forum discussion about it in the Church Planting forum. This Master the Bible System is what we are now working with in the Christ the Victor churches we are planting in LA, and many of our World Impact missionaries are now starting to work with it. Minimum Cost. DVD’s, Scripture memory cards, computer aids and study materials available for purchase.

New Life in Christ/Neuva Vida en Christo: (English/Spanish) World Impact Staff in San Diego turned me onto this resource some years ago. Here in Los Angeles, Pastor Jorge Rivera is currently using this resource at Iglesia Sembrando una Esperanza. There are three courses, both available in Spanish and English. The first study is 13 sessions and covers things like Salvation, Baptism, Communion, Witnessing, etc. The second study is also 13 lessons covering topics like Spiritual Warfare, money, forgiveness. The third study is 11 studies and focuses on the “one another’s” in Scripture. All of these studies include Scripture memory. They were developed by CAM missionaries working in Central and South America, and the courses can be downloaded at: www.obrerofiel.org/index.cfm

Master the Bible is the best tool in my opinion. However, I am aware of "The Purple Book" which is used extensively by one of our TUMI satellites, Baja Christian Ministries (who made me aware of it). They have found it highly fruitful in their ministry. It is available in English and Spanish. The inside cover says you can order it at www.everynationstore.com or orders@everynation.org. I have not looked into the pricing on this.
